Dad’s School Day Out: Volunteering In The Classroom Without Embarrassing Your Kids

Parents helping out with school activities is nothing new. Even when we were in school, the teachers called parents for volunteering to help with outings. Plus, many of those who teach after-school clubs are parents of some student or another.

What has changed in recent years is the number of Dads who feel comfortable to embark on these ventures. In the past, it’s fair to say that mothers have been the ‘go-to’ option. Certainly, any Dad who’s sat on a parent’s committee will have seen the sexual inequality present. In truth, volunteering will be no different. And, as new as it is to the kids to have a man around, it’s probably also new to you going along. Still, it’s vital that you support and encourage your kids by signing yourself up. You can take a backseat role here and just put your name down, or you can go all out and arrange a sign up on sites like https://www.signupgenius.com/schools. Either way, get your face seen. While you’re doing so, bear in mind that your kids will soon ask you to stop if you show them up in any way. In that instance, your efforts will go to waste. Which is why we’re going to look at how you can make the right impression without embarrassing anyone.

Get the Right Gear

First, you need to consider what you’ll wear. Think practical here, rather than stylish. It’s unlikely that a suit and smart shoe combo is going to work. And, something like that would really set you apart. Instead, make sure you know what you’ve signed up for, and get the gear necessary. If you’re going to be helping with sports, stock up on what you need. That could mean getting a football kit, or finding baseball pants using sites like http://www.thebaseballdiamond.com/cheap-mens-baseball-pants/. If you’re going on a field trip, find out whether you need your wellies or not. Success here is in the planning.

Volunteering: Ignore Your Kids Unless They Come to You

You’re out of your comfort zone and uncertain. What do you do? Cling to your kids like they’re guiding you, of course. But, if you want to win brownie points here, that’s no way to go about things. In fact, you should make an effort to avoid your kids as much as possible, unless they approach you. Bear in mind that you’re entering their space here. The dynamics are different, and you have to respect that. If you try to slip into your ‘home’ relationships, they could become embarrassed and withdraw. Instead, accept that your place is at the parent’s table, and stay there.

Just be Yourself

You may feel pressure to enter this situation with attempts at showing yourself as the best dad on the block. But, if you go in there with this in mind, you stand more chance of embarrassing everyone. Instead, be yourself. Don’t try to prove anything. Your presence shows that you’re a fantastic dad. So, chill out and stop trying to impress everyone.
