As a parent, it is your responsibility you ensure that your children grow up to be the happiest, healthiest, most successful adults they can be. It’s no easy task to equip your kids with all the tools they need to be well-rounded adults, I’m sure you’ll agree, but if you don’t do everything you can to ensure that happens, well, you will be doing your children a disservice and you will almost certainly regret it in the future.

Here are some life lessons, which if you teach them to your children before they reach adulthood, will have a huge impact on their lives:

You Should Never Take People for Granted

In this day and age, when we all lead such busy lives and have a million and one things we want to cross off our bucket lists before we die, it’s easy to take people for granted; to put off visiting grandma time and time again in favor of a good time because she’s always going to be there, right? Or to avoid returning your best friend’s calls because you’re just too busy with work. You will live to regret this one day.  The hard fact is that people will come in and out of your life all the time, and no one lives forever, so it is important to appreciate the people you do have – the people who truly care for you, and you them – while you can.

Life Lessons to Teach Your Children: Debt Should Be Used Sparingly

Just because it’s easy to get a credit card and pay day loans may not require credit checks, it doesn’t mean that you should use debt as your primary source of getting the things you want. There are probably going to be times in the future when you do need to use debt, but if you’re using credit to buy non-essentials, then you are wasting your money and compromising your financial future. It is much better to diligently save for the things you want than it is to buy them with credit on a whim if you want to be financially stable in the future.

Saving is Smart

Staying on the theme of money, it’s never too early to start teaching your kids about the benefits of saving. Buy them a piggy bank and have them put a small part of their allowance or any monetary gifts they need into it, or even their own first bank account, telling them that when they have saved enough, they can use the money for something they like, and they’ll very soon see why saving instead of spending every penny straight away, can be so good.

This might be a well-worn cliche, but sometimes cliches are cliches because they’re true and because they can help us all. Teaching your children that they shouldn’t give up at the first hurdle, and just because things don’t seem to be working out for them right now, they shouldn’t throw in the towel, will help them to build resilience and determination, and it is that which will help them succeed in the end.

Everyone Should be Treated with Respect

An important lesson for every child to learn if they are to be happy, healthy and respectable adults in their own right, is that everyone is basically equal and should be treated with equal respect. It doesn’t matter what color a person’s skin is, what they do for a living or how different they might be to you, they are a person, and you should treat them as you would a good friend. Children who can treat everyone with respect will grow into friendly, confident adults with the kind of personality that helps them go places.

[tweet “Life Lessons to Teach Children: Education is Important (But Not Everything).”]

This one is a no-brainer, but children should be taught from a very young age that learning new information and skills is one of the best ways to improve oneself and do good things with one’s life. However, it’s important to remember that not all children are academically inclined, so this should be balanced with lessons about trying one’s best and the benefits of learning practical as well as academic skills.

Obviously, when it comes to the wisdom you need to impart upon your kids before they’re fully grown, these points are just the tip of the iceberg, but they provide an excellent foundation, which will help you to grow happier, more well-rounded kids who have the potential to be great successes in their chosen field of life.
