Becoming a new parent is both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you are a couple, or going it alone, the emotional rollercoaster you are about to embark on will change you as a person forever. While the traumas of pregnancy and the long wait will go faster than you anticipate, one element many new parents panic about is what their new baby will need in those first few months. At this stage, especially if you are a first-time parent, you can often be a little over excited to buy everything in the baby shop. However, this can be a very expensive and it isn’t just in those first few months where you should be frugal. There are years of expenses to come.

What I am trying to advise is that there are ways to ensure you have all of what you need without overspending in the baby boutiques. I wanted to share with you some of the best advice to ensure you stay on track, allowing you to enjoy this journey without the added worry of finances.

How Not to Overspend: Are You Finding Out the Gender?

Not all new parents want to find out whether they are having a boy or a girl, but making this decision early on can help you with your spending. Whether team blue, pink or yellow this means you have some form of a theme when it comes to your spending. You can either buy some essential gender neutral sleepsuits and rompers or be specific with colors. Of course, it isn’t always important at this stage, but it helps with any other decision making on purchases as to whether you go for a color or stick with something more neutral.

Start with a List and Do Plenty of Research

Take some time out to write down what you think you need for your new baby. Even if you aren’t sure whether it is essential to make a note of it. Once you have your extensive list started, do some research and look online. Read reviews, read opinions, check safety ratings etc. What you may find is that you start to dwindle down your list to the essentials that you will need.

One important decision is the car seat, and often there are choices. Consider options like buying the Graco 4ever, as an example, that has extensive reviews and tips on how to choose the right one. Some choose a baby seat that fits with their pushchair system, others just go purely on safety elements. This isn’t the only purchase that will get confusing, think about where the baby will sleep, what features you may like and also how you are going to feed the new baby.

Finally, take some time to ask other parents for advice and tips on how what they think you may need in those early few months. Often, the information received from parents who have been in your position before is priceless and very informative. I started out as a single Dad and the advice I received from other friends and Moms was priceless.

I hope these tips help you if you are about to become a parent for the first time.
